“The secret of Happiness is Freedom, and the secret of Freedom, Courage.” Thucydides (460 BC – 395 BC), Greek Historian

We will celebrate 72nd Independence Day a few days from today. We know how India achieved its freedom from the British rule after the enormous struggle.

But what is freedom and are we really free? Freedom means the power or right to act, speak, and think as one wants.

We achieved our freedom from the external rule but most of us have remained a slave of money. As the famous thinker Seneca had once said, “It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor.”

We spend a large part of our lives to earn money, we fight for money, we act dishonestly for money, we worry for money, and we worry for the financial security of our family members.

Our freedom to act, speak and think and whatever we do are subject to our expectation of monetary gain or avoidance of monetary loss. Our mind is still shackled by the desire to have more and more money.

Rabindranath Tagore’s dream of; “Where the mind is without fears, and the head is held high,” have still reminded as elusive as it was before the independence.

Apart from every other worry, our worries about financial freedom are paramount. Let’s examine how we can achieve the real freedom.

Limit your expectations:

Expectations are the cause of all evils this is what the Buddha said, this is what Bhagavad Gita sermons, and this is what Yogavasistha Ramayana tells us.

Reduce your expectations from everything – from your acts, from your family, and from life. Accept whatever you get with humility.

Limiting the expectations is the first huge step to achieve mental freedom. Low expectations will make you fearless.

Earn to live not live to earn:

Change the attitude towards the life. As the saying goes for every generation now – Work hard and party hard. Yes, this is a balanced philosophy of life. The life is not about only work.

In India Sunday officially became a holiday in 1843. The story behind it is – According to Christianity God created the world in 6 days and on the 7th day he took rest i.e. Sunday.

Then we added Saturdays to the list of our weekly holiday to enjoy before we rest on Sundays.

Likewise working and enjoying goes hand in hand. Take a short and long vacation, enjoy weekends and liberate from the mindset of all work and no play.

Invest in Life Insurance:

This is another way you can achieve financial freedom. Having a life insurance policy adds to your mental peace. It does make you financially secure about your family.

“If a child, a spouse, a life partner, or parents depend on you and your income, you need life insurance.” Suze Orman.

This is important as worrying about the future of your family stops you from doing what you want to do in life.

Do what you love:

You are fearful. You don’t dare to pursue our dream. ‘Act as one wants,’ is very difficult with fear.

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.”
Henry David Thoreau.

Are you living the life the famous author had envisioned?

The real freedom comes when we dare to dream and pursue our dreams. The real achievers you see around also had a tough life. But they choose to live the life of freedom and dared to do what they believed in.

Make a list of all the worries in your life. Insure what you can and ignore what you can’t. Regain your freedom and live without fear.

Do you worry or do you dare? Your freedom is within you. Ignite a Gandhi within you to win over it. Celebrate the independence day with the fearless mind.

“You have the freedom to be yourself, your true self, here and now, and nothing can stand in your way”. Richard Bach, Jonathan Livingston Seagull
