The Road To Recovery Part 1

“Why the hell did this have to happen to me? I’ve never wronged anyone. Why did God did this to me?”, cried Ramesh. He was beside himself in a mixture of emotions. He was angry, disappointed, dejected, despondent, and shattered; all at the same time.

I has come to visit Ramesh in the hospital. He had just undergone an emergency surgery on his heart through the CABG(Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) procedure. It involved cutting open the heart and removing the blockage in some of the arteries that carry blood to and from the heart. He had been brought to the hospital 7 days back complaining of severe heart pain. The doctors detected severe blockage in a couple of his arteries. Overnight, his wife had to arrange for the cash to deposit the advance in the hospital.

The operation was successful, but post the surgery, he was clearly advised to stay at home for the next 6 months. This is what was disheartening for Ramesh. “But at least you don’t have to worry about money. You are covered by a Mediclaim as well as a critical illness cover”, I was trying to console him. Ramesh had a Mediclaim since a long long time and just last year he had bought a critical illness care policy from Edelweiss Tokio Life. This policy would give him a lumpsum amount to take care of his financial needs in case of a serious critical illness.

“ But still, why did God do this to me?”, Ramesh was inconsolable. I kept my hand on his shoulder.” Don’t worry, things will be fine. Just concentrate on your recovery and you’ll be back on your feet soon. Jobs may come and go, but your life cannot be compromised with.” He seemed to understand the sense behind what I was saying. He now had an income replacement for himself and his family.
